The Miyota 8 Series, Explained

One movement family powers a large share of every affordable automatic sold - and the single question people ask about it no longer has one answer. Here is the caliber map, from Miyota's own specifications.

If you buy an affordable automatic that is not a Seiko, a Citizen or an Orient, there is a good chance a Miyota 8-series movement is inside it. Miyota is Citizen's movement arm, it sells calibers to anyone who wants to buy them, and the 8 series is the cheap, tough, endlessly copied engine that made the sub-$300 mechanical watch a normal thing to own.

The confusing part is that "Miyota 8215" is not one answer to anything. The family runs to half a dozen calibers that share a size and a beat rate but differ in what appears on the dial - and, since a running change Miyota made around 2018-19, in whether the seconds hand stops when you set the time. This page is the map: what each number means, what Miyota publishes for it, and what the differences actually change on the wrist. Every figure below comes from Miyota's own caliber pages or the caliber reference cited at the bottom.

What the whole family has in common

Miyota files these under Standard Automatic; collectors usually call them the 82 series or just "the 8215 family". Whichever caliber you get, Miyota publishes the same core numbers:

  • 21 jewels and a 21,600 vph beat rate - six ticks per second, the slower of the two common rates. What that trades is explained in beat rate explained, and what the jewel count is actually counting in the jewels guide.
  • Approximately 42 hours of running time from a full wind - a day and a half, so a watch taken off on Friday night is stopped by Sunday. See power reserve explained.
  • -20 to +40 seconds a dayof stated accuracy, with a positional variation Miyota publishes as "under 50 sec". That is a wide band, and it is normal at this price.
  • Automatic and hand windingon every current member of the family, plus Miyota's Parashock shock protection.
  • A 11½ ligne movement about 26mm across. The 8215 is 5.67mm tall; the skeletonized 8N24 is 5.55mm. That height is why 8-series watches are rarely slim.

The caliber map

The differences are almost entirely about what you see from the front. Everything in this table is from Miyota's published page for that caliber.

There is no accuracy, reserve or jewel-count difference between any of them. Choosing an 82S0 over an 8215 buys you a hole in the dial, not a better movement - which is the honest framing on our open heart shortlist too.

One caliber you will see quoted that Miyota does not publish a page for is the 8N26. Authorized dealers list it inside Bulova's skeleton watches, and it sits in the same 8N branch as the 8N24, but there is no manufacturer datasheet to cite for it - so we treat it as a dealer claim wherever it comes up.

Does it hack? The question that changed answer

Hacking - the seconds hand stopping when you pull the crown out, so you can set the watch to the second - is the one thing everybody has always known about the 8 series: it doesn't. That was true for most of the movement's life, and it is still true of an enormous number of watches in circulation. It is no longer a safe assumption.

Miyota's current published specification for the 8215, 8205, 8N24, 82S0, 82S5 and 82S7 lists a stop second device under Function. The caliber reference we cite dates the change to roughly 2018-19, applied across the standard automatic catalog but not to every caliber at once - which is why it lists hacking for this family as "yes and no".

So the practical answer today is: the caliber number does not tell you. A brand-new watch from a current production run will probably hack. A watch designed years ago, built from older stock, or bought secondhand probably will not - and neither one is broken. Test it in ten seconds: pull the crown to its last position and watch the seconds hand. If it keeps sweeping, you have an older movement behaving exactly as designed.

This matters more than it sounds when you are comparing across brands, because Seiko's equivalents settled the question years ago - the 4R35/4R36 and the NH35 hack and hand-wind, full stop. Hand-winding, and the famous stutter

Hand-winding is not in doubt: Miyota publishes "automatic and hand winding" for the whole family, and the caliber reference puts a full wind at about 40 turns of the crown. That is the useful function of the two - it is how you start a stopped watch properly rather than shaking it.

The other family trait is the one that generates the most "is my watch faulty" questions. On an 8-series movement the central seconds hand is driven indirectly, and the result is a slight stutter or hesitation in the sweep - it does not glide as evenly as a Seiko 4R or an Orient in-house caliber. It is a design characteristic of the movement, not a fault, and no amount of servicing removes it. Some owners never notice; the ones who do tend to notice it forever.

There is a second, unrelated noise: the rotor. The 8 series winds in one direction only and the rotor runs in a plain bushing rather than on ball bearings, so it can be audible when you move your wrist. Also normal, also not a fault.

What the 9 series buys instead

If a watch is noticeably slimmer or its seconds hand noticeably smoother, it is usually running Miyota's Premium Automatic 9 series rather than the 8. Miyota publishes the 9015 at 24 jewels, 28,800 vph, -10 to +30 seconds a day, positional variation under 30 seconds, roughly the same 42-hour reserve - and a height of 3.90mmagainst the 8215's 5.67mm.

That is nearly 2mm off the movement, a tighter accuracy band and a faster, smoother sweep, and it is the reason microbrands charging $400 and up tend to specify a 9015. It costs the brand meaningfully more, so it almost never appears at the prices this site covers. Which watches we cover use one

Worth knowing before you read the spec sheet on any of these, because most of the brands involved will not print a caliber number at all:

  • Invicta 8926 Pro Diver - a Miyota 8215, and the cheapest way to own one in a 200m case.
  • Bulova Classic Aerojet 98A187 - cataloged against the 82S0 by the caliber reference and by an authorized retailer, though Bulova itself names nothing. Its review is where the hacking question gets tested in practice.
  • Bulova Sutton 96A330 - listed by dealers as the 8N26, the branch with no manufacturer page.
  • Timex Marlin Automatic - Timex publishes no caliber; the caliber reference lists the Marlin among the watches known to use an 8215.
  • Fossil Townsman - a skeletonized automatic whose maker publishes neither a caliber nor an accuracy figure, so nothing is claimed for it here.

The pattern is the point: the 8 series is what fashion and heritage brands buy when they want a mechanical watch without becoming a movement manufacturer. That is not a criticism - it is a real Japanese movement with a published specification and cheap parts - but it does mean the badge on the dial tells you less than the caliber underneath.

Is it a good movement?

It is a genuinely good cheap movement, and those are two different compliments. In its favor: it has been in production since the 1970s, every watchmaker has seen one, parts are everywhere, and the caliber reference found replacement 82S0 movements listed online between roughly $32 and $55 - which quietly answers the question of whether a $200 automatic is worth servicing rather than replacing. Against it: the accuracy band is wide, the sweep stutters, the movement is tall, and the hacking question depends on when your particular example was built. A Seiko 4R36 or an Orient F6922 beats it on every one of those points for not much more money, which is exactly why the value picks on the under-$300 roundup lean Japanese in-house. Buy an 8-series watch because you want that watch - the case, the dial, the price - not because you want that movement.

Does the Miyota 8215 hack?

It depends on when yours was made, which is not something the caliber number tells you. Miyota's current published specification for the 8215 lists a stop second device, and the caliber reference dates that change to around 2018-19 across the standard automatic catalog. A great many older 8215 watches were sold without it and do not hack. Pull the crown out and watch the seconds hand - if it keeps sweeping, that is an older movement working correctly, not a fault.

What is the difference between the Miyota 8215 and 8205?

The calendar. The 8215 has a date; the 8205 adds a day window alongside it. Miyota publishes identical figures for both otherwise - 21 jewels, 21,600 vph, roughly 42 hours, -20/+40 seconds a day, automatic and hand winding.

What is the difference between the 82S0, 82S5 and 82S7?

All three are open-heart calibers - the aperture in the dial shows the balance wheel. The 82S0 keeps a normal central seconds hand. The 82S5 swaps it for a small seconds subdial. The 82S7 has the small seconds and adds a 24-hour indicator. Same jewels, beat rate, reserve and accuracy across all three.

Why does my Miyota seconds hand stutter?

Because the 8 series drives the central seconds hand indirectly, which produces a slight hesitation in the sweep. It is a characteristic of the movement rather than a fault, it cannot be serviced out, and it has no effect on timekeeping. The faint rotor noise some owners hear is separate and also normal - the rotor winds one way and runs in a bushing rather than a ball bearing.

Is the Miyota 8215 better than the Seiko NH35?
