Power Reserve Explained

The most practically important number on an automatic watch's spec sheet, and the one buyers ignore. It decides whether your watch is running when you pick it up on Monday.

Power reserve is how long a mechanical watch will keep running after you stop winding it. A mainspring is a coiled ribbon of steel; winding tightens it, and it unwinds at a controlled rate through the gear train. When the spring is spent, the watch stops. The reserve is the number of hours between those two points.

Almost every affordable automatic gives you around 40 hours. A handful give you 80. That gap sounds like a doubling and behaves like something bigger, because of exactly where the weekend falls.

Why 40 hours is the awkward number

Take a watch off at 7pm on Friday. Forty-one hours later is midday on Sunday. That is the entire problem: a 40-hour watch dies at almost exactly the moment a weekend gets going, so every Monday morning starts with resetting the time and the date.

Resetting the time takes seconds. Resetting a date is the annoying part - advancing it manually through the calendar, ideally avoiding the hours around midnight when the date change mechanism is engaged. Why 80 hours changes ownership

Eighty hours from Friday evening is Tuesday morning. In practice it means a watch you wear three or four times a week never stops, and one you wear only at weekends is still running when you reach for it. It removes the single most common friction point in owning a mechanical watch.

It also removes most of the argument for a watch winder, which is a device that rotates a watch to keep an automatic's rotor turning. Our position on those has not changed - you almost certainly do not need one - but at 80 hours the case collapses entirely.

How the 80-hour movements do it

Two ways, usually together. First, a longer or thinner mainspring, which stores more turns in the same barrel. Second - and this is the interesting one - a lower beat rate.

Tissot's Powermatic 80 and Hamilton's H-10 run at a slower frequency than the ETA movements they descend from. A slower balance consumes less energy per hour, so the same mainspring lasts longer. The trade is theoretical: higher-beat movements are, all else equal, slightly more resistant to positional error. Reserve is not accuracy, and not build quality

A long reserve does not make a watch keep better time. A Seiko 4R36 at 41 hours and a Powermatic 80 at 80 hours are both specified to drift by tens of seconds a day; the Swiss movement is not meaningfully more accurate, it just runs longer. One genuine caveat: a mechanical watch keeps its best time in roughly the first two-thirds of its reserve, when mainspring torque is highest and most stable. A watch worn daily and kept near full wind will generally run more consistently than one that is constantly running down. That is an argument for wearing it, not for buying a longer reserve.

Does the reserve degrade over time?

It can. Lubricants thicken and gum up over years, which increases friction and shortens how long the watch runs. A noticeable drop in reserve - a watch that used to survive a night off the wrist and now does not - is one of the better early signals that a service is due. Should you pay more for it?

  • One watch, worn daily → no. A 40-hour movement never runs down, so the reserve is irrelevant to you. Spend the money on the crystal or the water rating instead - under $300 is where that logic pays best.
  • Two or more watches in rotation → yes, this is the case where it matters most. Every watch not on your wrist is running down.
  • A dress watch worn occasionally → yes, and it is the most underrated application. A watch you wear once a fortnight is dead every single time unless the reserve is long.

What does power reserve mean on a watch?

Why does my automatic watch stop over the weekend?

If you own more than one watch, or wear one only occasionally, yes - it is the difference between picking up a running watch and resetting a stopped one every time. If you wear the same watch every day, it makes no practical difference at all.

Does a longer power reserve mean a better watch?

No. Reserve and accuracy are separate specifications. An 80-hour Swiss movement is not necessarily more accurate than a 41-hour Japanese one - it simply runs for longer without winding.
