Hacking & Hand-Winding Explained
Two words that appear in every spec sheet on this site and are almost never defined. They are the two features you interact with most, and plenty of watches lack both.
Read any recommendation for an affordable automatic and you will hit the phrase "hacks and hand-winds" within two sentences. It is presented as obviously good, and it never gets explained, which is unhelpful when it is one of the few things that meaningfully separates a $100 movement from a $200 one.
Here is what each one is, what it feels like to live without them, and which of the calibers on this site have them.
Hacking: the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown
On a hacking movement, pulling the crown out to the time-setting position stops the balance wheel, which stops the seconds hand dead. You set the time against a reference, push the crown back in at the exact second, and the watch starts running perfectly synchronized.
On a non-hacking movement the seconds hand keeps sweeping while you set the hands. You can get the minutes right; you cannot get the seconds right, because there is no way to control where the seconds hand is when you push the crown home. You will be somewhere within thirty seconds of correct, permanently.
For most people that is a minor irritation rather than a dealbreaker. If you care about being on the second - and if you are going to measure your watch's accuracy at all, per the accuracy guide - you need hacking, because you cannot measure drift from a starting point you could not set.
Hand-winding: you can wind it from the crown
An automatic winds itself from a rotor that swings as your arm moves. Hand-winding means you can also wind the mainspring directly, by turning the crown in the neutral position.
Without it, a stopped watch has only one way to start: motion. You shake it, or you wear it and wait. Shaking a watch awake works but takes thirty to sixty seconds of vigorous swinging, it looks ridiculous, and it puts the rotor through exactly the kind of abrupt loading it was not designed for. Worse, you cannot get a watch to fullwind by shaking - you get it to "running," which is a different thing.
That matters because a mechanical watch keeps its most consistent time in roughly the first two-thirds of its power reserve, when mainspring torque is highest and steadiest. Two rows in that table explain most of the advice on this site. The Seiko 7S26 does neither, which is why the otherwise-lovable SNK809 comes with a caveat and why we point people at a 4R36 Seiko 5 instead when the budget allows. The Miyota 8215 hand-winds but does not hack, which is the honest asterisk on the Invicta Pro Diver and part of the reason it stays a $100 watch rather than a $200 one. One nuance: Miyota began adding a stop-seconds device to part of the 8215 family around 2018-19, so hacking on a given example is not something to count on unless the seller states it.
How to hand-wind properly
- Unscrew the crown first if the watch has a screw-down crown - most 100m and 200m watches do. Turn it counter-clockwise until it springs free. Never force a screw-down crown to turn while it is still threaded.
- Leave the crown in position 0, pushed all the way in against the case. This is the winding position. Do not pull it out.
- Turn clockwise, 20 to 30 turns, at a steady pace. On most automatics you will feel resistance build slightly but there is no hard stop - the mainspring slips at full wind by design, so you cannot overwind a modern automatic from the crown.
- Screw the crown back down if it screws down. This is the step people forget, and it is the step that keeps water out.

Does either affect accuracy or durability?
Hacking does not affect how well the watch runs; it affects how precisely you can start it. Hand-winding does affect running, indirectly, because it lets you keep the mainspring near full wind where torque is most stable.
Neither wears the watch out. Modern automatic mainsprings have a slipping bridle that prevents over-winding, and the winding mechanism is designed to be used. The one genuine caution is water resistance: every crown operation is a wear cycle on the crown gasket, which is why a hand-wound watch designed for daily crown use is often rated more conservatively than an automatic (water resistance ratings explained).
Does it matter enough to change what you buy?
- One watch, worn daily → both are conveniences. The watch never stops, so you rarely wind it, and you set it once. Do not pay a large premium for either.
- More than one watch → hand-winding becomes genuinely useful. Every watch not on your wrist is running down, and shaking each one awake gets old fast.
- You want to measure your watch's accuracy → you need hacking. There is no workaround.
- Budget under $150 → you will probably have neither, and that is a fair trade at the price. The under-$100 list is honest about it.
