Orient Bambino vs Seiko Presage Cocktail Time
The two default affordable dress automatics. One is smaller, cheaper and easier to wear; the other has the best dial under $500. The decision is mostly about your wrist.
If you want an affordable dress automatic, these are the two watches you end up between. Both have domed or box-shaped crystals, both run in-house Japanese movements that hack and hand-wind, and both look considerably more expensive than they are.
The short answer: the Orient Bambino V7 is smaller, cheaper and the safer buy for most wrists at 38.4mm with a 44mm lug-to-lug. The Seiko Presage Cocktail Time has a dramatically better dial and a box crystal, at 40.5mm with a 47.5mm lug-to-lug and a higher price. Measure your wrist first; it decides more here than taste does.

Size decides this more than anything

The dial is where Seiko pulls ahead
The Cocktail Time's lacquered sunburst dial under a box crystal is the single most impressive thing either brand does at this price. It changes character with the light in a way the Bambino's cleaner, flatter dial simply doesn't attempt. The Bambino answers with restraint and a domed crystal of its own. It looks like a classic dress watch rather than a statement one, which for a first formal watch is arguably the more useful thing to own.
Movements and water resistance
Both movements hack, hand-wind and hold around 40 hours, so this isn't a differentiator. Orient's F6724 is in-house; Seiko's 4R35 is the date-only sibling of the 4R36 in the Seiko 5 Sports. Either will need resetting after a weekend off the wrist.
Water resistance is a small win for Seiko: 50m against the Bambino's 30m. Neither is a swimming watch. 30m means splashes and rain only, and 50m means the same plus more margin for error — the ratings guide is blunt about what those numbers permit.
Crystals: neither is sapphire
Worth flagging together. The Bambino uses domed mineral; the Cocktail Time uses box-shaped Hardlex. Both will scratch more easily than sapphire, and both sit proud of the case where they're exposed. If a pristine crystal matters to you on a watch bought for its looks, the sapphire shortlist is a better starting point than either of these.
