For most people asking "what's a good first automatic," the honest answer is: a Seiko. The only question is which one.

Understand the two Seiko movements first
Almost every affordable Seiko runs one of two calibers, and the difference decides a lot:
- 4R36 (in the 5 Sports, Turtle and SRPG) — 24 jewels, and crucially it hacks and hand-winds. This is the one you want.
- 7S26 (in the classic SNK) — 21 jewels, reliable, but it does not hack or hand-wind. Fine for a first cheap watch; a small step down.

Which Seiko should you buy?
- One do-everything watch → the 5 Sports (SRPD). The 4R36, 100m, and the widest range of looks.

The one honest caveat: Hardlex, not sapphire
Seiko's affordable line uses Hardlex crystal, not sapphire. It's tougher against a hard knock but scratches more easily. If sapphire matters to you, the Orient Kamasu gives it to you for similar money — the one area where Orient clearly out-specs Seiko at this price.

What is the best affordable Seiko automatic watch?
For most people, the Seiko 5 Sports (a 4R36-powered SRPD): it hacks, hand-winds, has 100m water resistance and comes in the widest range of styles. For a real diver, the Prospex Turtle; for the smallest budget, the classic SNK809.
What is the difference between the Seiko 4R36 and 7S26?
The 4R36 hacks (stops the seconds hand for precise setting) and hand-winds; the older 7S26 does neither. The 4R36 also has 24 jewels to the 7S26's 21. Both are reliable, but the 4R36 is the meaningful upgrade and is in most current Seiko 5 Sports models.
Do affordable Seiko watches have sapphire crystals?
Generally no — the affordable Seiko lineup uses Hardlex crystal, which is impact-resistant but scratches more easily than sapphire. For sapphire at a similar price, look at the Orient Kamasu.
