Who's behind this

Dial & Date is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who's genuinely into affordable mechanical watches. Not a certified watchmaker, not a "veteran of the industry," not a lab with a wall of test equipment — just someone who finds this corner of the hobby fascinating, reads the manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the math. No lab coat.

That framing matters, because it's the truth, and the truth is the whole product here. A lot of watch content leans on implied authority — years of testing, dozens of watches on the wrist, an expert panel. We don't have those things, and we're not going to pretend we do. What we have instead is a method you can check.

Why the site exists

Because the affordable-automatic space is genuinely great — you can own a real mechanical movement for the price of a mid-range pair of headphones — and the buying advice around it is often either shallow, out of date, or quietly padded with watches that don't belong. Prices are stale. Selection methods are invisible. Nobody tells you which watch to skip.

Dial & Date is built for the value hunter: the person who wants roughly 90% of the result for 40% of the price, told straight. Every roundup ranks real watches by a published, reproducible method, shows a live date-stamped price, and includes an explicit "who should skip this" — because the most useful thing we can do is occasionally talk you out of a watch you'd regret.

What we do

• Compile published movement and case specs from manufacturer datasheets.
• Compare movement grades side by side — jewels, accuracy, hacking, hand-winding.
• Do the fit math (case size and lug-to-lug vs real wrist sizes) and the cost-of-ownership math.
• Track live prices from Amazon and date-stamp every one.
• Say who each watch is for — and who should skip it.

What we don't do

• We don't claim to have wrist-tested watches in a lab we don't have.
• We don't invent accuracy figures, ratings or review counts.
• We don't show a price we can't verify live — a gap beats a stale number.
• We don't let a commission change which watch we rank first.
