Start with the budget, or start with the person

The two rules that matter more than the watch

Rule one: buy their wrist, not their taste. A 45mm diver on a 6.25-inch wrist will live in a drawer. Look at what they already wear and buy the same size or smaller — and judge by lug-to-lug (the strap-end to strap-end length), which is what has to fit across the wrist, not the diameter printed on the box. Rule two: tell them it's mechanical. An automatic watch winds itself from the motion of a wrist, so one that has been sitting in a box will be stopped and showing the wrong time when they open it. That is normal, not a fault. Wind the crown twenty or thirty turns, set it, and mention that it will stop again after a couple of days off the wrist. Strap or bracelet? For a gift, the strap

A steel bracelet almost always needs links removed before it fits, which means a jeweler or a $10 tool and some swearing. A leather, rubber or nylon strap buckles to size on the spot. If you want the watch on their wrist the moment the box opens, buy the strap version where one exists — swapping to a bracelet later is easy. The exception is the integrated-bracelet watch (the Citizen Tsuyosa, the Tissot PRX), where the bracelet is the design and only the maker's own straps fit; those are superb gifts, but learn the wrist size first.

What not to give
