Bulova Sutton vs Bulova Aerojet

Bulova's two see-through automatics. Same brand, same 30m dress brief, same silence about which movement is inside - and one of them has a sapphire crystal.

By Stephen V.Updated October 5, 2026How we pick

Buy the Sutton 96A330. It is the only one of the two with a sapphire crystal— anti-reflective and domed — it is the easier 40mm size on standard 20mm lugs, and its full skeleton dial is a far bigger visual event than the Aerojet's single aperture. The Aerojet 98A187 is the pick only if you want the cheapest way into a dressy see-through automatic and you are willing to live with a mineral crystal.

Before you buy either, know the catch that applies to both: Bulova publishes no caliber name and no accuracy tolerancefor these watches. If a documented movement matters to you, the third pick on this page — Orient's Bambino Open Heart — is the one to buy instead, and it costs about the same.

The crystal decides this comparison

The Sutton ships a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The Aerojet ships a double-curved box mineral crystal. A box crystal stands proud of the bezel, which is exactly what gives the Aerojet its expensive-looking silhouette — and exactly what puts it first in line for every door frame you walk past. Mineral scratches far more readily than sapphire, and a non-standard proud shape is a more awkward replacement part. The crystal guide has the hardness comparison.

On a watch whose whole appeal is seeing through the front, a crystal that hazes over with hairline scratches is not a cosmetic footnote. This is why the Sutton anchors our sapphire shortlist and the Aerojet does not.

What Bulova does not publish - and why we say so twice

Neither specification names a movement. The Aerojet's dial is printed "AUTOMATIC / 21 JEWELS" while Bulova's own specification publishes neither number — the jewel count comes from the watch, not the datasheet. Authorized retailers list the Aerojet as carrying the Miyota 82S0 and the Sutton as carrying the Miyota 8N26, and we report those as dealer claims rather than as specifications, because that is what they are.

That matters for one concrete reason. The 82S0 shipped without a stop-seconds device before roughly mid-2019 and with one after, and both still circulate. Because Bulova names no caliber, a buyer cannot tell from the listing which they will be sent, and a non-hacking example is not a fault. The Miyota 8-series guide gives the ten-second crown test that tells you which one arrived, and hacking and hand-winding explained covers why you would care.

European retailer feeds for the Aerojet variously claim 50m and a sapphire crystal, both of which contradict Bulova's own page. When a retailer and a manufacturer disagree, the manufacturer wins — our method page states that rule, and buying watches on Amazon safely covers how to check a listing against the brand's own specification before you click.

Skeleton against aperture: how much do you want to see?

The Sutton's dial is genuinely cut away in layers, with applied indices and lumed hands on top of it — a real skeleton, not a printed effect. The Aerojet is a solid dress dial with one window over the escapement, plus rose-gold-tone hands and markers on grey.

The honest trade is legibility. A cut-away dial is harder to read at a glance than a plain one, which is why neither of these appears high on the dress-watch shortlist, where a clean dial wins. Both do sit on the exhibition-caseback list, since both show the movement from the back as well.

Fit: 40mm on 20mm lugs beats 41mm on a dress case

The Sutton's 40mm case on 20mm lugs is the easiest strap fitment in this group — 20mm is the most common width made, so every leather, rubber and NATO on the shelf fits. The Aerojet is 41mm, which is large for a dress watch, and Bulova publishes no thickness or lug-to-lug for it at all. The sizing guide explains why lug-to-lug is the number that decides overhang, and the strap guide covers swapping either.

Both are 30m. Treat them accordingly.

Thirty metres means splashes and hand-washing, not swimming and not showering. Neither watch has a screw-down crown. What each rating actually permits is the five minutes that saves a movement.

Which should you buy?

  • Best watch of the two → Sutton 96A330. Sapphire, 40mm, 20mm lugs, the bigger visual event.
  • Cheapest way into a see-through automatic → Aerojet 98A187, accepting mineral.
  • You want the movement documented → Orient Bambino Open Heart. In-house F6T22, 22 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, hacks and hand-winds — and you give up the sapphire to get it.
  • You want a published daily tolerance too → the standard Orient Bambino at -15/+25 sec/day.
  • You want the whole category ranked → best open-heart watches under $500.

Questions

FAQ

Which Bulova automatic has a sapphire crystal?

The Sutton 96A330 — a domed, anti-reflective sapphire. The Classic Aerojet 98A187 has a double-curved box mineral crystal. Some European retailer feeds claim sapphire for the Aerojet; Bulova's own specification does not, and the manufacturer wins.

What movement is in the Bulova Sutton and Aerojet?

Bulova does not say. Authorized retailers list the Sutton as carrying the Miyota 8N26 and the Aerojet as carrying the Miyota 82S0. Those are dealer claims, not published specifications, and we report them as such.

Does the Bulova Aerojet hack?

It depends on the example. The Miyota 82S0 that retailers associate with it shipped without a stop-seconds device before roughly mid-2019 and with one after, and both still circulate. Because Bulova names no caliber you cannot tell from the listing. A non-hacking example is not faulty.

Can you swim with a Bulova Sutton or Aerojet?

No. Both are rated 30m with no screw-down crown, which covers splashes and hand-washing only.
