Sapphire vs Mineral vs Hardlex

Sapphire resists scratches far better. It also shatters more readily and costs more. Here's the honest trade-off, and when it's worth paying for.

The crystal is the piece of transparent material over the dial, and at affordable prices it comes in three forms: sapphire, mineralglass, and Seiko's proprietary Hardlex. It is the part of a watch you look at every single time you check the time, and the part most likely to show damage.

The short version: sapphire resists scratches enormously better, which is why it's used on almost every expensive watch. It is also more brittle and more expensive. Most of what you read about this is overstated in both directions.

Why sapphire resists scratches

Synthetic sapphire is extremely hard — hard enough that almost nothing you meet in daily life will mark it. Door frames, desk edges, keys, concrete: all softer. The common exceptions are diamond and, more relevantly, the fine quartz grit in sand and some dust, which is why even a sapphire crystal can pick up marks at the beach.

Mineral glass is ordinary hardened glass and is softer than a lot of what you brush past. Hardlex is Seiko's proprietary treated mineral glass — better than plain mineral, nowhere near sapphire. If you have ever seen a well-worn Seiko diver with a hazy crystal, that's Hardlex doing what Hardlex does.

The trade-off nobody mentions

Hardness and toughness are different properties. Sapphire's hardness is exactly why it is more brittle: a hard, direct impact on the edge of a sapphire crystal is more likely to chip or crack it, where mineral glass will flex slightly and absorb the blow or scratch rather than break.

In practice, scratches are common and impacts of that severity are rare, so sapphire wins the argument for most people. But if your watch is going to take genuine knocks — manual work, climbing, a job with hard edges — a mineral or Hardlex crystal that goes hazy is a cheaper and less dramatic failure than a cracked sapphire.

Reflections and anti-reflective coating

Sapphire reflects more light than mineral, which is why most sapphire watches add an anti-reflective (AR) coating. Where the coating is applied matters:

  • Underside only — the common approach at this price, including the Tissot PRX and the Seastar. Reduces reflections and cannot wear off, since the coating is protected inside the case.
  • Both sides — much clearer, almost invisible glass, but the outer coating wears and scratches over time and cannot be repaired without replacing the crystal.

Domed and box crystals

Shape changes durability as much as material does. A flat crystal sits inside the bezel and is the best protected. A domed crystal (the Orient Bambino) curves up and catches light beautifully but is more exposed. A box crystal (the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time) has steep vertical sides and stands proudest of all — gorgeous, and the most likely to catch a door frame. On a box or domed crystal, the material matters more than usual.

When sapphire is worth paying for

Our position: it's worth paying for when the price gap is small, and it usually is. The Orient Kamasu costs a little more than the Mako II and adds sapphire to an otherwise near-identical watch — take the sapphire. Citizen's Tsuyosa ships sapphire where Seiko ships Hardlex at the same money.

It is not worth reorganizing your whole shortlist around. A Hardlex crystal on a watch you love is a better outcome than sapphire on a watch you settled for, and a scratched crystal can be polished (mineral) or replaced (any) for far less than the price difference on an expensive watch. Living with each

Mineral and Hardlex crystals with light hairlines can often be improved with a polishing compound made for glass; deep scratches need replacement, which is inexpensive on a Seiko. Sapphire cannot be polished — it is harder than the compounds — so a damaged sapphire crystal is replaced. Either way, the habit that saves you most is not resting the watch face-down, and keeping it away from sand.

Is sapphire crystal worth it on a cheap watch?

Usually yes, when the price gap is small. Sapphire resists scratches far better than mineral or Hardlex, and on watches like the Orient Kamasu it costs only a little more than the equivalent mineral model. It is not worth compromising on the watch you actually want to get it.

Is Hardlex the same as sapphire?

Can sapphire crystal break?
