What Is COSC Chronometer Certification?
The only accuracy claim in watchmaking backed by an independent test. Also the claim that separates a $400 watch from a $2,000 one - and the reason we do not chase it.
"Chronometer" is one of the few words in watch marketing that has a legal, testable meaning. It is not a synonym for chronograph, it is not a style, and it cannot be applied to a watch just because the brand feels good about it.
It is worth understanding for one specific reason: it is the benchmark against which every accuracy claim on this site should be read - and nothing we recommend carries it. Knowing what that means, and what it does not, is genuinely useful when you are deciding how much to spend.
What COSC is
COSC is the Swiss official chronometer testing institute - an independent, non-profit body that tests uncased movements submitted by manufacturers and certifies the ones that pass. A watch can only be called a chronometer in Switzerland if its movement holds that certificate.
The critical word is independent. Every other accuracy figure you will read, including all the ones quoted on this site, is a manufacturer's own specification. COSC is a third party testing the actual movement that goes into your watch.
What the test involves
Each movement is run for 15 days, measured daily, in five positions and at three temperatures - roughly 8, 23 and 38 degrees Celsius. It has to pass seven separate criteria, of which the headline one is average daily rate.

The five-position element is the part that matters most in practice. A mechanical watch keeps different time dial-up, dial-down and on each of its edges, because gravity pulls on the balance differently in each. A movement that holds -4/+6 across all five has been genuinely well regulated, not just adjusted in the one position that flatters it.

The gap is large and it is honest to say so. A chronometer is specified to a window of ten seconds a day; a Seiko 4R36 to a window of eighty. That is a real difference in engineering and regulation effort, and it is a real difference in price.
Why we do not chase it
Three reasons, and none of them is that accuracy does not matter.
First, it does not exist at this price.Certification costs money per movement and requires regulation work that affordable production does not include. There is no certified chronometer in this site's price band, so "buy a chronometer" is not advice, it is a different budget.
Second, real-world results overlap more than the specs suggest. Published tolerances are worst-case guarantees, and plenty of ordinary 4R36 and F6922 movements run within ten or fifteen seconds a day in practice. A well-behaved Seiko can outperform its spec by a wide margin - see the accuracy guide for how to measure yours.
Third, if accuracy is genuinely the priority, quartz wins outright. A $50 Casio is specified to about 15 seconds a month - roughly thirty times better than a certified mechanical chronometer costing hundreds of times more. Nobody buys a mechanical watch for accuracy, and automatic vs quartz is the honest version of that argument.

- "Chronometer-grade" and similar phrases. Marketing. If a movement holds a certificate, the brand will say so specifically and unambiguously, because it paid for it.
- Superlative, Master, METAS and in-house standards.Several manufacturers run their own tests, some genuinely stricter than COSC, and test the cased watch rather than the bare movement. They are legitimate but they are the manufacturer's own standard, not an independent one.
What to look for instead in this price band
- A published tolerance at all. Orient and Seiko publish figures; Citizen and Tissot do not for several calibers. A published number you can check is worth more than an unpublished one you cannot.
- Hacking, so you can actually set the watch precisely enough to measure it (explained here).
- The option to regulate. A common, well-documented caliber can be regulated by any watchmaker for a modest fee, often to within a few seconds a day. That is the affordable route to chronometer-like performance, and it is covered in the accuracy guide.

Can I make my watch as accurate as a chronometer?
Sometimes close. A watchmaker can regulate a common caliber for a modest fee and often bring it to within a few seconds a day in the positions you actually wear it. That will not make it certified, but it may make it keep similar time.
