Your new automatic gains 15 seconds a day and you're worried. Don't be — here's what's normal, why it happens, and how to fix a watch that's genuinely off.

First-time automatic owners panic about accuracy more than anything else. Here's the reassuring truth: an affordable automatic that gains or loses 15–20 seconds a day is working exactly as designed. It is not broken. Quartz has spoiled us — a mechanical watch is a different kind of object, and a little drift is the price of the craft.

But there's a line between "normal drift" and "something's wrong," and this guide draws it — plus what to do about it.

What's normal, by movement

Every movement has a factory accuracy spec — the range it's guaranteed to fall within. Most watches run better than spec in real life. Rough expectations:

  • Seiko 7S26 / Miyota 8215: −20 to +40 sec/day rated; often ±15 in practice.
  • Seiko 4R36: −35 to +45 sec/day rated; frequently much better.
  • Orient F6922 / F6724: −15 to +25 sec/day rated — tighter to begin with.
  • Swiss Powermatic 80 / H-10: regulated tight, often within a few sec/day.

Why your watch runs fast or slow

  • How you store it overnight. A mechanical watch runs at slightly different rates in different positions (dial up, crown down, etc.). You can actually tune daily accuracy by choosing which position you rest it in overnight — this is the single easiest fix.
  • How wound it is. A watch near the end of its power reserve often runs less accurately. Keep it well wound.
  • Magnetism.Fridges, laptop speakers, phone cases and bags with magnetic clasps can magnetize a movement and make it suddenly gain minutes a day. It's common and easily fixed with a cheap demagnetizer.
  • Temperature and age. Both shift the rate slightly; a service every several years resets things.

"My automatic watch isn't keeping time" — a checklist

If your Seiko, Citizen or Orient automatic keeps stopping or losing large chunks of time, run through this before assuming it's faulty:

  1. Are you wearing it enough? An automatic needs motion. Desk-bound days can leave it under-wound. If it stops overnight, it may simply not be getting wound during the day — hand-wind it 20–30 turns in the morning (if the movement hand-winds).
  2. Is it stopping completely?That's a power-reserve issue (see above), not necessarily a fault.
  3. Suddenly gaining minutes a day? Almost always magnetism. Demagnetize it — a $10 tool fixes it in seconds.
  4. Losing time and never fully winding?If it's well worn and still struggling, the mainspring or rotor may need service.

Can you fix it — regulation

If a watch consistently runs fast or slow beyond what overnight positioning can fix, a watchmaker can regulateit — a quick adjustment to the balance that brings the rate into line, often for a modest fee. Many enthusiasts learn to do it themselves. The point: a "fast" automatic usually isn't broken, it's just unregulated.

When to actually worry

Worry if the watch loses large amounts of time despite regular wear, stops even when fully wound, or its rate suddenly changes and demagnetizing doesn't help. Otherwise, relax — drift is normal, and if perfect accuracy is what you're after, quartz was always the answer.
