Why Is My Automatic Watch Losing Time?
Usually it's one of five things, and three of them you can fix yourself in a day. Here's how to diagnose it before you pay anyone.
First, the reassurance: some drift is normal and not a fault. Affordable calibers are specified in tens of seconds a day — Seiko's 4R family at roughly −20 to +40 seconds, Orient's F6922 at −15 to +25. If your watch is inside its published tolerance, it is working exactly as designed, and no amount of adjustment will turn it into quartz.
What isn't normal: sudden changes. A watch that kept ±10 seconds a day for a year and is now gaining two minutes a day has a cause, and it is usually one of the five below. The accuracy guide covers the baseline expectations; this page is for when something has changed.
1. It isn't fully wound (the most common cause)
An automatic winds from wrist motion. A desk job, a weekend off the wrist, or simply not moving much can leave the mainspring only partly wound — and a partly wound mainspring delivers less consistent torque, which shows up as the watch running slow and then stopping overnight.
The test:hand-wind it 30 turns (if the movement hand-winds), wear it for a full day, and compare against a phone clock at the same time each day for three days. Most "my watch is slow" complaints resolve here. The setting guide covers winding properly.
2. It's magnetized
This is the cause behind almost every case of a watch suddenly running fast — minutes per day rather than seconds. A magnetic field makes the coils of the hairspring cling together, shortening its effective length and speeding up the balance. Laptop speakers, tablet covers, magnetic phone mounts, handbag clasps and induction hobs are the usual culprits.
The test:hold a compass next to the watch and move the watch slowly. If the needle deflects, it's magnetized. The fix: a demagnetizer costs very little, takes a few seconds to use, and is completely reversible. Any watchmaker will also do it in a minute, often for nothing.

3. Position — and how you store it
A mechanical watch runs at slightly different rates depending on its orientation, because gravity pulls on the balance wheel differently. The difference between dial-up and crown-down can easily be five to ten seconds a day on an affordable movement.
The fix, which is free: if your watch runs fast overnight, try storing it in a different position — crown-down or dial-down instead of dial-up — and see whether the overnight gain cancels out the daytime loss. Many people can get an affordable automatic to within a few seconds a day this way without any adjustment at all.
4. It's taken a knock
A hard impact can shift the regulator or, worse, damage a pivot. The tell is a sudden change in rate immediately after a specific event — dropping the watch, a hard fall, a heavy DIY session. Nothing here is fixable at home; a watchmaker can re-regulate a shifted regulator cheaply.
5. It's due a service
Lubricants dry out and thicken over years, and a movement running on old oil loses amplitude and consistency. The signs are gradual rather than sudden: rate drifting steadily worse over months, a shorter power reserve than it used to have, or the watch stopping while still on the wrist.
Service intervals are typically quoted at 5–10 years. On an affordable automatic the honest economics are awkward — a full service can cost a large fraction of what the watch cost new, which is why many owners run them until they stop and replace them. We discuss that trade-off here.
How to diagnose it properly
- Set the watch precisely against a phone clock, wear it normally, and record the difference at the same time each day for five days. One day's reading tells you nothing.
- If it is running fast by more than about a minute a day, check for magnetism first. That is nearly always the answer.
- If it is running slow or stopping overnight, wind it fully by hand and repeat the five-day test. Under-winding is nearly always the answer.
- If it is inside the published tolerance for its caliber, experiment with overnight storage position before doing anything else.
- If the rate changed suddenly after an impact, or has drifted steadily worse over months, see a watchmaker.
What you should not do
Don't open the caseback yourself to "adjust the regulator" unless you know exactly what you're doing — you will break the water resistance, and dust in a movement costs more to fix than regulation does. Don't buy a watch winderto solve a slow watch; a winder keeps a stored watch running but doesn't improve its rate. And don't expect a mechanical watch to hold quartz accuracy at any price — that's not a fault to chase, it's the trade you made. If it turns out to be the wrong trade, quartz is right there.
