How Do Automatic Watches Work?
No battery, no motor, no chip — just a spring, a weight and a beating balance wheel. Here's the whole mechanism in plain English, in about two minutes.
An automatic watch keeps time without a battery, a motor or a microchip. It runs on a coiled spring, wound by the motion of your wrist, releasing its energy in tiny, precisely measured steps. Here's the whole thing in plain English — the 40-word version first, then the detail.
The short answer: A weighted rotor spins as your wrist moves and winds a mainspring. The mainspring slowly unwinds, and an escapement releases that energy in even ticks that drive the hands. No battery is needed — your motion is the power source.
The four parts that matter
- The rotor. A half-moon weight on the back of the movement that swings freely as your wrist moves. You can watch it spin through an exhibition caseback.
- The mainspring.A coiled ribbon of spring steel. The rotor's motion winds it tighter; it stores the energy that runs the watch.
- The gear train.A series of gears that transfers the mainspring's energy to the hands, stepping it down to the right speeds for seconds, minutes and hours.
- The escapement & balance wheel.The heartbeat. The balance wheel swings back and forth at a fixed rate (typically 21,600 or 28,800 times an hour), and the escapement releases the gear train one precise step per swing. That's the ticking you hear and the sweep you see.
Why there's no battery
A quartz watch uses a battery to vibrate a quartz crystal and a small motor to move the hands. An automatic replaces all of that with mechanical energy: youare the power source. Every time you move, the rotor tops up the mainspring. Wear it daily and it never runs down. This is also why it's called "automatic" — an older manual watch needs winding by hand every day; an automatic winds itself.
Power reserve, winding and hacking — the three terms to know
- Power reserve is how long the watch runs after you take it off — usually around 40 hours, up to 80 on a Powermatic 80. Leave it off longer than that and it stops.
- Hand-windingmeans you can wind the mainspring manually via the crown — handy after the watch has stopped, so you don't have to shake it awake.
- Hacking means the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown out, so you can set the time to the exact second. Better movements (Seiko 4R36, Orient F6922) do both; older ones (Seiko 7S26, Miyota 8215) do one or neither. See movements explained.
Does that make them less accurate?
Yes, a little — a mechanical escapement can't match a quartz crystal, so expect roughly −20 to +40 seconds a day rather than quartz's seconds per month. That's the trade for the craft.
