How To Use A Dive Watch Bezel

Most people who own a dive watch have never used the bezel for anything. It is a genuinely useful timer, and the reason it only turns one way could save a diver's life.

A rotating bezel is the ring around the crystal with a 60-minute scale on it. It is the defining feature of a dive watch, it is the reason dive watches are the most-bought style of mechanical watch, and the overwhelming majority of owners have never turned it on purpose.

It is an elapsed-time timer, it takes about two seconds to use, and it is more convenient than a phone for a surprising number of daily tasks.

The basic operation

  1. Note where the minute hand is.
  2. Rotate the bezel so the marked pip - the triangle or dot at 12 - lines up with the minute hand. The bezel will click as it turns; most dive bezels have 120 clicks, one every half minute.
  3. Read the elapsed time off the bezel scale. Wherever the minute hand now points on the bezel numbers is how many minutes have passed.

That is the whole mechanism. There is no start button and nothing to reset - the minute hand is the timer, and the bezel is just a movable zero.

Why it only turns counter-clockwise

Try turning the bezel clockwise on any proper dive watch and it will not move. That is deliberate, and it is a safety feature rather than a manufacturing shortcut.

A diver sets the bezel at the start of a dive to track remaining air. If the bezel were knocked during the dive and could rotate freely in either direction, a clockwise knock would make the elapsed time read shorter than it really was - telling the diver they had more air than they did.

Because it turns only counter-clockwise, any accidental movement can only ever make the elapsed time read longer. The failure mode is a diver surfacing early, which is survivable. Reading the scale

Most dive bezels are marked the same way and it is worth knowing why:

  • The first 15 or 20 minutes are marked in individual minutes, the rest in five-minute increments. Decompression stops and safety stops happen in that first window, so precision matters most there.
  • The pip at 12 is lumed on any bezel worth having, so the timer is usable in the dark - which is the whole point underwater. A bezel with an unlumed pip is styling rather than equipment, and it is one of the checks in watch lume explained.
  • Some bezels are marked to 60, some to 20. A 60-minute scale is the standard elapsed-time bezel; shorter scales are for specific timing tasks.

What people actually use it for

Almost nobody with an affordable dive watch is timing decompression stops. Here is what the bezel is genuinely good at:

  • Parking meters. Set it when you park, glance at your wrist rather than unlocking a phone.
  • Cooking. Pasta, eggs, anything under an hour, with no timer to hear over a kitchen.
  • Laundry, and anything with a machine cycle.
  • Tracking how long you have been in a meeting, which is either a productivity tool or a coping mechanism.
  • Marking when you last did something - took medication, started a workout, put fuel in. Set it and the answer is on your wrist for the next hour.

The advantage over a phone is that it never needs unlocking, never runs out of battery, and works with wet or gloved hands. It is a small thing that turns out to be habit-forming.

Looking after it

  • Rinse after salt water. Salt crystals in the bezel mechanism make it gritty and eventually seize it. Fresh water and a gentle rotation is all it takes.
  • A stiff bezel is usually dirt, not damage. Rinse and work it; do not force it or pry at it.
  • Do not use the bezel as a grip to pull the watch off your wrist. Repeated sideways force is what loosens the click spring.
