A day window is the most useful complication most people will ever own, and it is decided entirely by which caliber is inside. Here are the affordable automatics that have one.
A date window tells you the number. A day-date tells you it is Thursday, which - if you have ever stood in a kitchen genuinely unsure - is the more useful of the two. It is also, at this price, entirely determined by the movement: some calibers have the mechanism and some do not, and no amount of dial design changes that.

The caliber rule
Two numbers do most of the work in this market, and the difference between them is exactly one complication:

That is the whole trick. If a spec sheet says 4R36, F6922, 7S26 or NH36, the watch has a day window. If it says 4R35, F6724 or NH35, it does not - and the two are otherwise identical, which is covered in the movement comparison.

- Best if you want it smaller → the Seiko 5 Sports SRPG31 at 39.4mm - though check its 48.1mm lug-to-lug against your wrist first.
- Best in the water → the Seiko Turtle: 4R36 day-date, 200m, and the best lume in the class.

Setting a day-date without breaking it
This is the one piece of practical maintenance a day-date watch demands, and getting it wrong is the most common way people damage an affordable automatic.
Between roughly 9pm and 3amthe movement engages the mechanism that advances the calendar at midnight. Using the quickset during that window puts load on parts that are already under load, and repeated over years it breaks teeth. The safe method is to move the hands to around 6 o'clock first, set the day and date, then set the time - the full sequence is here.
Second point: on most of these calibers the day advances in two steps - many will show an intermediate language before switching to English, which is normal and not a fault.
Is a day window worth choosing a watch for?
Honestly, only if you will use it. It adds a second window to the dial, which costs you some symmetry, and purists prefer the cleaner look of a date-only or no-date dial for exactly that reason - most dress watches, including the Bambino, are date-only by design.
What we would not do is pay a premium for it. Within Seiko and Orient the day-date and date-only calibers cost the same, so this is a preference to satisfy rather than a feature to buy. Start from the master list and use the caliber rule above to filter.

What is the best automatic day-date watch?

Why should I not change the date at midnight?
